(36) my commonplace article

Ahhh okay so I totally spaced out when I was writing the blog entry for yesterday, because I thought we were still on reading commonplace articles and writing about them! So I’m making this one to hopefully correct the one I did last night. So in English class yesterday, we had to brainstorm and come up with ideas for our own commonplace articles. Some of the ideas of my classmates were really good! Mine was about “date rape” or the common type of rape in the college environment. It isn’t really part of my paper, but I came across some statistics when doing my rape research, and the figures were alarming.

"1 in 4 women in college today has been the victim of rape, and nearly 90% of them
knew their rapist."

I Never Called It Rape, Robin Warshaw
Since rape is defined as forced sex, the intimacy could have started out as consensual but as soon as the girl says no and the guy does not respond to this, it is considered rape. This is a common college nightmare, since practically all college kids are familiar with the date rape drug, also known as “ruffies”. The session in class really helped me form my ideas and sort out the things I was interested in and the ones that were not so interesting. I plan to give tips on how to prevent date rape and how to party safely. I think that this issue would be considered timely and relevant, because college freshmen in America are known to get really excited about living without their parents, and tend to go crazy with this newly acquired freedom.

  1. You are definitely right about people going overboard after leaving their parent's watchful eye. I know plenty of people who are guilty of this!

  2. It's really common and I guess understandable, but it's pretty dangerous when people lose control like that
