Today I read an article written by a fellow Ohio State student about “The Dangers of Social Networking”. With the recent Facebook boom, I think it is a very relevant issue to write about, considering that the Facebook craze is now a worldwide phenomenon. During my international student orientation here at the ohio state university, I met a number of European exchange students. The first thing they asked for was my whole name, so that they could look me up on Facebook and add me. Practically all the Chinese students on my floor have Facebook as well. These realizations and the article that I just read really brought to my attention the significance of online social networks in modern times, and how it affects people. The article related some of the ways by which Facebook negatively affects people’s lives; things like health risks, job opportunities, and legal matters, can be directly or indirectly influenced by social networks. No one really thinks about the consequences of their wall posts; crude language and inappropriate words are a trend, especially when friends “hack” another friend’s account. Pictures with beer bottles and barely-there clothes are also quite popular. Things like that can be seen by potential employers and could possibly eliminate you as a candidate for the job. One thing she didn’t really touch on though is the personal information that people give out on facebook. Some people actually put their home phones, addresses, what schools they came from, and things like that. There are so many ways that information like that can be used against a person, so it isn’t really safe to put things like that out there for the world to see.
Before Facebook was just a way to keep in touch with friends. Now it's much more important. People's lives can be ruined on Facebook.
